The World Wide Web offers widely accessible technology, fast access to massive amounts of information and the opportunity for personal interaction with numerous individuals simultaneously. All these activities are determined by the interfaces we use to access these environments and the ways we conceive these environments spatially. Cognitive studies have provided us with knowledge about the ways our culture perceives virtual spaces, our strategies for navigating these spaces and the ways we visualise/map online environments. Alternatively, Virilio conceives the world of interactive, informational networks as an illusion – a ‘lost dimension’. In this lecture we explore the relationship between interface design, cognitive mapping and our experience of networked culture.
