alt.cyberkids
Following my analysis of the ways in which children's net access was discursively constructed within Anglo-American print media from 1995 to 2000, an evaluation of children's perspectives on their own use of the net became imperative. To this end, I coordinated ALT.CYBERKIDS, a cyberclub for under twelves, run with the help of three technical assistants from Cardiff University's Department of Computer Science, Frankie, Shian and Diana. The cyberclub compromised of five weeks of workshops at the Cardiff Cybercafé: ten hours, 9 computers, 9 kids - what could under twelves do with this space?
The .pdf version of the hypertext ALT.CYBERKIDS: RITUALS OF RESITANCE? case study fulfills a contractual obligation to submit the entire thesis in a print form that may one day accumulate dust on the top shelf of the Cardiff University Library. As I discuss in depth in LOGO(DE)CENTRISM, acknowledging the significance of meaning-making through modes other than simply the written word makes this rich media hypertext version a more appropriate choice for a multimodal study of this kind.
As I problematise in LOGO(DE)CENTRISM, the website as a whole is grounded on awareness that the emancipatory potential of the net has everything to do with the ways in which, what is commonly referred to as hypertexts, but what I prefer to call multitexts
can enable multiple authorship. By way of attempting to fulfill this potential, these pages include links to the cyberkids' own webpages, movie clips of sessions & audio interviews of their web experiences. I have also included excerpts from a number of thinkers, writers, creators in the field which appear in new windows as you click on the symbol '
'. Texts originating from various authors will then be linked to relevant works online. Allowing you to access these resources first-hand. More importantly, I welcome any comments you may want to add to these multitexts. All contributions will be linked to the particular idea, or node, in question (again they will be shown by the symbol '
' and will appear in a new window alongside that node). There are a number of ways to read these multitexts, which do not necessarily follow a linear form.
As I discuss further in the RATIONALES section of the study, my transformative role as researcher is always invariably existent - through my location as a biopolitical body with my own research motivations. In BY-PASSING MY TRANSFORMATIONS, you have the opportunity to access the raw visual and audio data and the websites produced by the cyberkids directly. To a limited extent, this part of the website allows you to draw your own trajectory through the data and arrive at your own conclusions about these under twelves’ interactions online and offline.
Kaplan's E-literacies has been my main source of influence in devising an interface that increases this site's usability, encouraging readers to become the website's authors too. As such, I am continuing the 'experiment in the design of conversational spaces' (Kaplan, ongoing). The choice of whether to view the .pdf or engage in this ‘conversational space’ in the hypertext version of this case study is yours.
All Quicktime movie clips require Quicktime Viewer and may take a little time to load. However, once downloaded your browser will save it in a cache file, so you'll be able to review the clips more quickly next time.
